Introduction

...ShopNow.com: made from the best stuff on Earth.

Welcome to the Darth Vader building! Darth Vader is the nickname people have given to the Sedgwick James building, and is the new home of the ShopNow Professional Services team.

Previously, the 15th floor was home to AXC Interactive Solutions. When ShopNow acquired AXC in January 2000, we made the decision to keep the space and make it the home of the Professional Services group, since space at Merrill Place was and continues to be very tight.

This document will hopefully give you all the information you need to hit the ground running. Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask any one of your fellow employees who have been around for a while. We're a helpful crowd around here.

Navigating the Office

...how to find your way around without looking like a newbie.

Meeting the Receptionist

The Professional Services receptionist is Jessica Leppaluoto. Her desk is located just inside the main door to the office. She handles all the incoming phone calls to the main number, and does a great job handling guests and clients when they come to Darth Vader.

Restrooms

You can find the restrooms in the south half of the office.

Building Security

There are three levels of security within our office:

  1. Cardkey Access

The building itself is secured via the use of standard swipe cards, just like those in use at the Merrill Place building. There are swipe readers at the main doors to the lobby, as well as in the elevators.

During off hours you'll be required to use your assigned card key to get in the building as well as to take the elevator to the 15th floor.

Off hours are currently before 6:30 AM, after 5:30 PM, and all weekends and standard holidays.

  1. Proximity Locks

The server room in the South side of the office is secured with a proximity badge reader. Access to this room is restricted to personnel on an as-needed basis only, to provide maximum security to certain production machines.

Conference Rooms

There are two conference rooms on the 15th floor for meetings. The BLUE conference room right next to the reception area on the North side of the floor.

The second conference room is in a windowed office on the Southwest corner of the office. Currently named 15th Floor South in your Outlook address book. Conference space will be tight so common courtesy applies. Please begin and end your meetings on time and be respectful of others by leaving the room clean. If your meeting is canceled please go into your calendar and cancel the meeting so others may schedule the room during that time.

Instructions for scheduling a meeting room:

When scheduling a meeting in one of the new office conference rooms, please follow the procedure listed below (it's changed from how our current conf. rooms are handled). You must follow these procedures, or you WILL NOT secure the room for your meeting!

1) In Outlook, change to the Calendar portion of the program

2) Click on the miniature calendar icon shown below "File" on the menu bar. This will create a new appointment item.

3) Click on the "Attendee Availability" tab near the top.

4) Click on the "Invite Others" button (lower left).

5) Pick the people you want to attend your meeting and choose whether they are required or optional, then click on the conference room you want to use AND CLICK ON THE "RESOURCES" BUTTON (this will place the conference room you want in the lower right textbox).

6) Click "OK" to close this window.

7) Complete the time, subject and other information needed and send.

This is the only way the scheduling system will register your time block on the conference room you have selected.

Lunchroom

The lunchroom is a multipurpose room located just north of the reception desk in the north half of the office. In addition to providing an eating area, you'll find the following amenities:

Game Room

The Game Room is located in the south half of the office, just past the restrooms in the center of the space. Still unfinished, it will soon house a pool table and other diversions for you to use to blow off steam.

Design Center

The Design Center is where all the Design staff hang out and work their magic. You can find it on the west side of the floor, just to your right as leave the north half of the floor and head down the short hallway to the south half. You can't miss the bright colors and funky furniture!

QA Lab

The QA Lab is located in the south half of the office and houses the workstations the QA team uses to test our applications when Dev hands them off. This room has rack space and work space for their equipment.

Server Room

The Server Room is just south of the QA lab. This is where we house our departmental production servers, some of the development servers, and selected other boxes for which we need to ensure physical security.

The server room is secured with a proximity badge reader, and access to the room is limited to those with a demonstrated need.

If you feel like you need access to this room to do your job, contact the Professional Services project coordinator, Julie Witthar.

Elevators

There are three sets of elevators to be found on the lobby level.

The elevators to get to the parking garage are on the northeast corner of the lobby, and take you down to the A, B, and C levels of the garage.

There are two sets of elevators going up from the lobby - one set for floors 1 - 11 and another set for floors 12 - 21. The elevators you should use to get to Professional Services are on the north side of the lobby, more or less directly across from the Starbucks coffee shop.

Note that all elevators in the building have security card readers, and you will need your swipe card to use the elevators during off hours.

Technical Information

...true story: we invented the term cyberspace.

Your Computing Profile

If you have any concerns about your equipment, send an e-mail to the PS Help alias. If you are unable to send e-mail, contact Jessica at the front desk and she will be happy to assist you.

Static IP Addresses

If you need a static IP address, please send an e-mail to PS Help indicating the reason you need one. The Professional Services helpdesk staff will route the request to the appropriate NOC engineer and get back to you ASAP.

If you are moving from Merrill Place, you should already have static IP addresses assigned.

Network Bandwidth Information

The Professional Services home office is connected to the corporate LAN at Merrill Place by a DS-3 connection administered by ELI. This is an upgrade from the T-1 connection we had up through March 2000.

Printing

There are two shared network printers in the Professional Services group. One printer is located on the west side of the lunchroom. The other in the South side of the building by the restrooms. The specs are:

Lunchroom PRINT SERVER:

\\FS-AXC

PRINTER NAME:

LunchRoom_LJ4050

SouthEnd West PRINT SERVER:

\\FS-AXC

PRINTER NAME:

south_printer_west

SouthEnd East PRINT SERVER:

\\FS-AXC

PRINTER NAME:

South_printer_east

Example of adding a printer connection in Windows:

  1. Browse to the network folder \\FS-AXC

  2. Right click on the closest printer to you.

  3. In the context menu that appears, select Install.

The printer should now be usable from your Windows machine.

Helpdesk Support

Ryan Femling is the Professional Services helpdesk support person, reporting to the Professional Services Director of Technology. He will handle all front-line support for desktops, selected departmental servers, common application issues, network problems, desktop software licensing, common maintenance issues.

If you have a problem, send e-mail to the PS Help alias. This mail goes to Ryan; he will escalate to the ShopNow NOC personnel as appropriate. Please don't send mail to Helpdesk as a first resort.

Expect a quick turnaround on work stoppage issues. For lower-priority issues, such as checking out CDs, etc., be patient and plan ahead where possible to provide our helpdesk staff with as much lead time as possible.

Ryan can be found in the server room, or walking around the office helping users with their problems. In the event of an emergency situation with a Professional Services departmental server, contact Ryan at his cellular number: 206.818.7482

If Ryan is not available, escalate to Brandon Masterson 206.849.3102

If either of these numbers don't get you a response, escalate to the ShopNow NOC staff via the Helpdesk alias.

Contact Information

...where the heck am I? Or, you can get here from there!

If you need something that you don't see, let Jessica know and she will order it for you.

Parking

Parking at the Darth Vader building is extremely limited. The Professional Services group has very few spaces and all of them are reserved at this point.

There are several parking lots close by that you should consider if you plan to drive to work:
